Pakistan is hosting the Asian Masters Weightlifting Championship 2026 in Islamabad,
bringing together around 250 athletes from 21 countries. The international event started on
October 20 and will continue until October 25 at Liaquat Gymnasium in the Pakistan Sports
Complex.

The championship is organised by the Pakistan Masters Weightlifting Association (PMWA) with
support from the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB). It aims to promote masters weightlifting and give
experienced athletes an opportunity to compete on an international platform. The event also
offers participating countries a chance to build stronger sporting relationships.

Athletes are expected from Pakistan, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka,
Nepal, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Belarus,
Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Ecuador, and Egypt. Their participation will make the
championship an important gathering for the international weightlifting community.

PMWA President Arshad Khan said hosting the competition was a positive step for Pakistan’s
sports sector. He explained that international events could help improve the country’s image and
strengthen its links with athletes and sports organisations around the world.

The championship may also bring economic benefits to Islamabad. International visitors can
create more business for hotels, restaurants, transport services, and other hospitality
businesses. Such events can also encourage sports tourism and introduce visitors to Pakistan’s
facilities and local culture.

The Pakistan Sports Board developed the idea of organising international competitions last year
to support the country’s sports economy. Organisers hope the championship will encourage
more international sporting events and create new opportunities for athletes in Pakistan.

Several international sports officials are expected to attend the event. They include Asian
Weightlifting Federation President Al Mana Mohamed Yousef, Saudi Arabian Weightlifting
Federation President and General Secretary Mohammed Ahmed Al Harbi, Denise Offermann,
and Asian Masters Weightlifting Association President Mohammad Kabiri.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 12:30 pm on Tuesday at Liaquat Gymnasium. The
championship is expected to promote sportsmanship and international cooperation while
encouraging people to stay active at different stages of life.
