Kot Lakhpat Jail Prisoner Death: Deputy Superintendent Suspended

The Kot Lakhpat Jail prisoner death case has led to action after Punjab authorities
suspended Deputy Superintendent Kamran Maqbool. The Punjab Home Department
suspended Maqbool over alleged negligence, incompetence and conduct against departmental
rules. He was serving as Deputy Superintendent Executive at Central Jail Lahore when the
incident took place.

Six other jail officials, including an Assistant Superintendent, had already been suspended
based on the initial inquiry report. The action followed a clash among prisoners that left one
inmate dead and another seriously injured. A three-member inquiry committee is examining the
incident and collecting statements from injured prisoners and jail staff.

The Home Department has also issued several posting and transfer orders within the Punjab
Prisons Department. Fazal Elahi has been appointed Deputy Superintendent Executive at
Central Jail Lahore under new orders. Hafiz Muhammad Rizwan has been appointed Deputy
Superintendent Executive at District Jail Jhang. Asif Murtaza has been posted as Deputy
Superintendent Executive at Central Jail Faisalabad. Shahzad Ahmed has been directed to
report to the Inspectorate of Prisons Punjab.

The department has issued rules for administration and management across prisons in Punjab.
Officials said these measures are aimed at improving discipline, supervision and compliance
with established prison procedures. The Home Department also repeated its zero-tolerance
policy regarding negligence, mismanagement and violations of official rules.
The latest suspension is part of continuing action following the Kot Lakhpat incident. Authorities
are reviewing inquiry findings before deciding whether additional officials should face action.
The allegations against suspended officials are administrative matters and remain subject to the
findings of the ongoing inquiry.
The inquiry will determine responsibility based on available evidence and statements.
Authorities have said further action will be taken according to law if wrongdoing is established.
The investigation remains underway as officials continue reviewing the circumstances of the
prisoner’s death.
