Mental health awareness is important for building a healthier and more caring society.
Psychiatrist Professor Dr. Aftab Asif has urged people to give mental health the same attention
as physical health. He said people should not ignore stress, anxiety, depression or other
psychological problems. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can help individuals manage
these challenges and improve their quality of life.
Dr. Aftab Asif shared his views with the Associated Press of Pakistan in Lahore on Friday. He
previously served as chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at
King Edward Medical University and Mayo Hospital Lahore. His message came ahead of World
Mental Health Day 2026. This year’s theme is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real
change,” which encourages people to listen to those facing mental health challenges.
The psychiatrist explained that modern lifestyles and financial pressures can affect people’s
emotional wellbeing. Family difficulties and social problems may also increase stress and make
daily life more challenging. However, timely treatment and support from loved ones can help
people cope with these difficulties. He encouraged families to discuss mental health supports
openly and avoid making anyone feel embarrassed about seeking help.
Dr. Aftab Asif also explained that certain changes in behaviour may indicate a mental health
concern. These signs include ongoing sadness and anxiety alongside changes in sleeping
habits or appetite. Constant tiredness and losing interest in favourite activities may also require
attention. Difficulty concentrating and avoiding social contact are other warning signs that should
not be ignored.
He stressed that mental health problems can affect people of every age and background.
Parents should listen carefully when children or teenagers experience sudden changes in
behaviour. They should offer understanding and encourage young people to share their worries
without fear of criticism. Older family members also need care when they experience loneliness
or withdraw from social activities.
The psychiatrist recommended simple habits that can support better mental wellbeing. These
include getting enough sleep and eating balanced meals alongside regular physical activity.
Positive social relationships can also help people manage everyday stress more effectively. He
advised people to maintain a healthy balance when using mobile phones and other media.
Dr. Aftab Asif said people should seek professional help when stress begins affecting work or
education. Support may also be necessary when mental health difficulties disturb family
relationships and everyday routines. He urged society to respond with kindness rather than
criticism or isolation. Creating safe spaces for honest conversations can help people feel
understood and receive appropriate care.
He also emphasised that mental health awareness should continue throughout the year.
Families and educational institutions can help by encouraging open discussions and sharing
reliable information. Workplaces and communities should also support people who are facing
emotional difficulties. Greater understanding and timely treatment can help create a more
compassionate and mentally healthier society.
