Pakistan has detained several leaders of Imran Khan’s party after imposing emergency rule in
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Pakistan emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has increased
political tensions between the federal government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
President Asif Ali Zardari announced the emergency on Sunday and suspended the provincial
government led by PTI. Federal officials said the decision was necessary because provincial
authorities had failed to control rising militant violence. However, PTI rejected this explanation
and claimed the move aimed to stop supporters from marching towards Islamabad to demand
Khan’s release.
Among those detained were Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and several members of his cabinet.
Afridi is a close ally of Imran Khan and was leading the provincial administration. Federal
Minister Talal Chaudhry confirmed that the chief minister and some cabinet members had been
taken into preventive custody.
Security forces surrounded the chief minister’s residence in Peshawar before carrying out the
detentions. Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed while shipping containers blocked
nearby roads. Police also detained PTI supporters in Peshawar and the nearby Khyber district.
Witnesses reported that officers fired shots into the air to disperse crowds.
The emergency followed several days of protests by PTI supporters across the province.
Demonstrators planned to march towards Islamabad to demand Khan’s release from prison and
access to medical treatment. Khan’s three sisters and hundreds of supporters were also
detained before the planned march.
Authorities closed educational institutions in Peshawar and cancelled examinations scheduled
for Monday because of fears of unrest. Islamabad was also placed on high alert with additional
police deployed near important government buildings.
Federal officials said people facing criminal cases would be charged and tried while others could
be released. The government said the emergency was necessary to improve security and
control militant activity. The PTI rejected the decision and accused authorities of targeting its
leadership.
The development has raised concerns about Pakistan’s political stability and public safety. The
situation could further increase tensions between the federal government and the opposition
party.
