Sri Lanka Make History by Chasing 430 Runs Against England in ODI Cricket

Sri Lanka created history on Thursday by chasing a huge target of 430 runs against England in
the third match of the ODI tri-series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. They won by two wickets
with just one ball remaining and recorded the second-highest successful run chase in ODI
cricket history.

The match produced several remarkable records as both teams scored a combined total of 859
runs. This became the second-highest total in an ODI match. England scored 429 runs for four
wickets in their 50 overs before Sri Lanka reached 430 runs for eight wickets in 49.5 overs.
England captain Harry Brook delivered an outstanding performance by scoring 202 runs from
just 114 balls. He achieved the fastest double century in ODI cricket by beating Shubman Gill’s
previous record of 117 balls. Brook also recorded the highest individual ODI score by an
England batter and the highest individual ODI score on Pakistani soil.

Joe Root scored 69 runs from 66 balls and became the first England batter to reach 8,000 runs
in ODI cricket. Will Jacks also played an important role by scoring an unbeaten 66 from only 30
balls. Tom Banton contributed 50 runs to help England build a powerful total.

Sri Lanka responded with an impressive batting performance led by Pavan Rathnayake. He
scored 130 runs from 106 balls and received the Player of the Match award. Avishka Fernando
and Dasun Shanaka both scored 97 runs to keep Sri Lanka’s hopes alive during the difficult
chase.

Fernando and Rathnayake shared a valuable partnership of 166 runs. Later, Shanaka added
momentum with his attacking batting before Janith Liyanage took responsibility during the final
overs. Liyanage remained unbeaten on 61 runs from 27 balls and finished the match with a six
off the fifth ball of the final over.

England’s Josh Tongue took three wickets while Sam Curran claimed two wickets. However,
their efforts could not prevent Sri Lanka from completing the historic chase.
England have now lost both of their matches in the tri-series. They will face Pakistan on October
25 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. The remaining matches of the tournament will also take place
in Lahore, including the final scheduled for October 31.

Sri Lanka’s victory will be remembered for its remarkable run chase and outstanding individual
performances. The match showed how determined batting and strong partnerships can change
the outcome of even the most challenging cricket contests.
