Pakistan’s Emergency Measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Raise Political Concerns

Imran Khan PTI protests have increased political tensions in Pakistan after authorities
introduced emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The province is a major political
stronghold of former prime minister Imran Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
Thousands of supporters have taken to the streets for several days demanding Khan’s release
from prison. Schools were temporarily closed and roads were blocked while internet services
faced restrictions in several areas.

The federal government said these measures were necessary to protect residents from possible
security threats. Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar accused the provincial PTI
government of having links with militant groups. However, he did not immediately provide
evidence to support his allegations. Within two days schools reopened in Peshawar and internet
services returned across much of the province. Authorities continued efforts to prevent further
protests as several PTI leaders reportedly went into hiding.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi led the demonstrations before his whereabouts
became unclear. The PTI claimed that Afridi had been arrested while the federal government
said he was in protective custody. On Tuesday dozens of supporters gathered in Bara in Khyber
district. Reports from the area also mentioned tear gas during the demonstrations. The protests
followed the September arrests of three of Imran Khan’s sisters who remain detained according
to the original report.

Imran Khan has remained in prison since August 2023 and has been convicted in several
corruption cases. He maintains that the cases against him are politically motivated. His
supporters have expressed growing concern about his health and limited access to family
members and lawyers. These concerns have increased pressure on PTI leaders to organise
demonstrations and continue demanding his release.

Political analysts warn that emergency measures could increase public anger instead of
bringing stability. Pakistan is already facing rising militancy and difficult relations with
neighbouring countries. Experts fear that removing the provincial government could create
further challenges for federal authorities. They also warn that expanded military operations may
bring additional security risks. The situation highlights the difficulty of managing political
disagreements while addressing Pakistan’s wider security challenges.
