Six Prison Officials Suspended After Deadly Clash at Kot Lakhpat Jail

The Kot Lakhpat Jail prisoner clash has resulted in one prisoner’s death and injuries to
several others in Lahore. The incident happened after two groups of prisoners became involved
in a serious confrontation inside the jail. Prisoner Muhammad Ashraf suffered critical injuries
during the incident and was shifted to General Hospital Lahore. Doctors later confirmed his
death at around 9:30 am, according to reports. Four other prisoners were also injured during the
confrontation and received medical treatment at the hospital. Punjab Inspector General of
Prisons Mian Salik Jalal took notice after the incident and ordered action against responsible
staff. Six prison officials and employees have now been suspended for ninety days following an
inquiry. The suspended officials include two Assistant Superintendents, one Chief Warden and
three Warders. Reports said the clash was linked to a dispute involving the prison kitchen and
food arrangements. The development has raised concerns about security, supervision and staff
responsibilities inside the Lahore prison.

A three-member inquiry committee was formed to investigate the incident and determine how
the confrontation developed. The committee included senior prison officials who began
recording statements from injured prisoners and jail staff. The investigation was ordered by
Punjab Home Secretary after the deadly incident at Kot Lakhpat Jail. Authorities also directed
officials to provide proper medical care to all prisoners injured during the clash. The suspended
officials included staff responsible for the kitchen and Central Tower operations at the facility.
Their suspension followed findings from the inquiry committee regarding alleged negligence in
performing their duties. Meanwhile, the inquiry report concerning the Deputy Superintendent
and Superintendent has been sent to the Home Secretary. Further decisions will depend on the
findings and review of the remaining responsibilities. The incident has renewed public attention
on prisoner safety and security arrangements inside Punjab prisons. Authorities are expected to
examine the circumstances carefully and take further action according to the inquiry findings.
