The AI Education for Special Children initiative is being planned by the Punjab government to
bring modern technology into special education. Secretary Special Education Punjab Shoaib
Iqbal Syed announced the plan on September 28, 2026, under the provincial government’s
wider education reform efforts. The initiative aims to help children with special needs become
familiar with artificial intelligence and other modern digital tools. Under the plan, teachers
working in special education institutions will receive special training to teach AI effectively. The
department is also looking at simple and interactive ways to introduce technology in classrooms.
Officials want education to become easier, more interesting, and more useful for children with
different learning needs. The proposed reforms include technology-based activities and
game-based learning methods that can encourage students to participate actively. Punjab has
recently expanded its focus on AI education across schools, with plans for AI education from
Class One to Class Twelve and greater use of technology in learning.

The new plan places strong importance on teachers because trained educators will guide
children in using modern technology. The Special Education Department already provides
professional training for teachers working with children who have different disabilities. Its training
programs include modern teaching methods, educational technology, computer training, and
assistive teaching technology. The department also trains teachers who work with children with
hearing, visual, physical, and other learning difficulties. The planned AI training can build on
these existing skills and introduce teachers to new digital learning methods. Officials are also
considering games and activities that can make lessons easier for children to understand. Such
learning methods can give students more opportunities to participate, practice skills, and learn
at a comfortable pace. The overall aim is to make classrooms more welcoming and supportive,
while giving teachers better tools to respond to the individual needs of special children.

The latest announcement is also connected with wider efforts to improve special education
services across Punjab. Earlier in September, the Special Education Department and UNICEF
held a policy dialogue in Lahore about improving education for children with disabilities. The
discussions focused on accessible curricula, better teacher preparation, improved teaching
quality, and future-ready education services. Education officials, teachers, parents, experts, and
other stakeholders took part in the discussions. The dialogue ended with the Lahore
Declaration, which provides a roadmap for coordinated action and better educational outcomes
for children with disabilities. These priorities support the idea of using modern technology to
improve learning opportunities for special children. The department has also continued working
on specialized educational and support services, including programs for children with autism. In
May, the Maryam Nawaz School and Resource Centre for Autism launched its second phase,
with new children receiving education, therapy, and assessment plans.

Technology can provide new ways for children with special needs to learn, communicate, and
take part in classroom activities. However, the success of these reforms will depend on suitable
training, accessible tools, and teaching methods that match each child’s abilities. The Special
Education Department already includes educational technology and assistive technology in its
teacher training programs. Its official training information also highlights the use of play, sports,
music therapy, and practical activities for developing different skills among children. The
proposed AI education plan can add another learning opportunity to these existing methods.
Instead of depending only on traditional classroom teaching, students could gradually be
introduced to digital tools through simple and supervised activities. Teachers will have an

Punjab is already moving toward a broader technology-based education system, with artificial

attention. A recent provincial initiative aims to train more than 160,000 teachers in AI and
modern technology, while helping students develop digital skills for future opportunities. The
special education plan extends this direction toward children with disabilities, giving them
opportunities to learn about technology in ways suited to their needs. The government’s stated
focus is to make special education modern, simple, and more effective through better teaching
methods. If implemented with proper training and accessible resources, the initiative could give
