Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi has hosted the UK Fellowship examinations for eye
specialists for the third consecutive year. This achievement highlights Pakistan’s growing role
in international medical education and provides doctors with better opportunities to improve their
professional skills.
A total of 71 candidates participated in the examinations alongside medical professionals from
different countries. Five examiners from Al-Shifa worked with 15 international examiners to
assess candidates and maintain professional standards. The event also encouraged doctors to
share knowledge and learn from international medical experts.
Al-Shifa Trust President Maj. Gen. (Retd) Rehmat Khan said the Royal College of
Ophthalmologists had selected the hospital again because of its medical facilities and
educational environment. He explained that this continued partnership showed international
confidence in Al-Shifa’s ability to conduct recognised professional examinations.
The partnership offers an important benefit to Pakistani ophthalmologists who want to earn
international qualifications. Doctors can take these examinations in Pakistan instead of travelling
abroad, helping them save money and avoid travel difficulties. This opportunity makes
professional development more accessible for eye specialists across the country.
The Royal College first held its examinations at Al-Shifa in 2024 after establishing a partnership
with the hospital. Visiting examiners included Sophie Donovan, Acting Director of Examinations
at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Other visiting professionals included consultant
ophthalmologist Osama Giasin and examiner Muhammad Mohyudin from the United Kingdom.
Rehmat Khan described hosting the examinations as an honour for Pakistan. He said Al-Shifa
would continue working with international medical institutions to improve specialist training and
support professional development. These partnerships can help Pakistani doctors gain valuable
experience and strengthen their medical knowledge.
Better training for eye specialists can improve the diagnosis and treatment of complicated eye
diseases. Patients may also benefit from stronger local medical expertise and reduced
dependence on treatment abroad. Al-Shifa Trust plans to continue its international cooperation
to expand educational opportunities and improve eye care services throughout Pakistan.
