Family support for psychiatric patients can make an important difference during treatment
and recovery from mental health conditions. Prof. Dr. Jodat Saleem shared this message during
a special ceremony at Lahore General Hospital on Thursday. The Department of Psychiatry
organised the event to observe World Mental Health Day and increase public awareness. He
explained that emotional care and attention from family members can support treatment along
with medical care. He said mental health should receive the same attention as physical health
because both are important for a balanced life. Prof. Jodat Saleem also stressed the importance
of listening to patients and understanding their personal experiences. He called for these
experiences to be considered when healthcare policies are prepared for psychiatric services.
Such an approach can help improve patient care and restore confidence among people facing
mental health challenges. It can also help patients feel respected and supported during what
can be a difficult period in their lives.

Medical Superintendent LGH Prof. Dr. Faryad Hussain and Psychiatry Department Head Prof.
Dr. Faiza Athar also addressed the gathering. They encouraged people to seek professional
medical help when early signs of mental health problems become noticeable. They explained
that continued sadness, restlessness and disturbed sleep may require proper medical attention.
Changes in appetite, weak concentration and unexplained tiredness can also be warning signs
of mental health problems. Persistent negative thoughts may also be connected with depression
or anxiety and should not be ignored. The doctors explained that modern psychiatric care
involves several treatment methods beyond medicines alone. These methods include
psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, relaxation techniques and telepsychiatry
services. Digital health tools and community programmes can also provide useful support to
people who need mental healthcare. The ceremony included an awareness walk and
distribution of educational material among participants. Former patients also shared their
recovery experiences to give hope to others facing similar challenges. Doctors, medical
students, patients and family members attended the event in large numbers. Their participation
showed the importance of creating an environment where people can discuss mental health
without fear or shame. The ceremony ended with a cake cutting activity and a pledge to help
reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. The event delivered a positive message about
health & lifestyle, compassion, understanding and timely professional care for people
experiencing mental health difficulties.
