Nepal is planning its first feasibility study for a proposed Himalayan tourism highway to connect
popular mountain destinations and improve travel for visitors. The Himalayan tourism highway
aims to link Badimalika in western Nepal with Pathibhara in the eastern region.
Nepal Infrastructure Construction Company Limited and the Department of Roads have signed
an agreement to carry out the study. According to officials the technical teams are expected to
begin fieldwork soon.
The first phase will examine two proposed road sections. The first route will cover 105
kilometres from Api Nampa in Darchula through Saipal in Bajhang to Badimalika in Bajura. The
second route will cover 45 kilometres from Num in Sankhuwasabha to Pathibhara in Taplejung.
Shubharaj Neupane, spokesperson for the Department of Roads, said the project aims to
improve road safety and attract more tourists. He explained that better road connections could
increase visitor numbers and support local businesses.
The feasibility study will examine different road options and assess how existing roads could
connect with the proposed highway. Officials will also consider feeder roads that could help
nearby communities reach the main route.
The study is expected to take six months. It will examine construction costs and technical
requirements along with social and environmental impacts. Experts will also compare alternative
routes to identify options that reduce expenses and limit damage to nature.
The government hopes to complete the study during the current fiscal year and move towards
construction in the following year. Officials will prepare a detailed project report after reviewing
the study results.
The final road surface may use concrete or asphalt depending on the findings. Authorities want
to develop a highway that remains usable throughout the year and provides safer access to
remote mountain areas.
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has also highlighted the country’s natural attractions as
destinations that deserve greater international attention. During his election campaign he
mentioned Badimalika and Ramaroshan along with Khaptad National Park as important tourism
sites.
Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal said the proposed highway was an important
step towards connecting Himalayan communities and tourist destinations. He explained that
improved transport could support tourism and create more opportunities for local people.
Prabhakar Thapa, chief executive officer of Nepal Infrastructure Construction Company Limited,
said two separate teams would carry out the fieldwork. The study will also consider local
markets and settlements to ensure that the proposed roads benefit nearby communities.
If approved after the study, the project could improve access to religious sites and mountain
attractions. It may also support local economic activity while helping Nepal promote its natural
beauty to domestic and international visitors.
