The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across Punjab from October 6 to October
15 amid security concerns. The order bans gatherings of five or more people at public places,
roads and open spaces throughout the province.
According to the Punjab Home Department, rallies, processions, public meetings, sit-ins and
demonstrations are prohibited during this period. Carrying or displaying weapons at public
places is also banned. People are further prohibited from encouraging others to join unlawful
gatherings.
The restrictions cover the entire province and were introduced after law enforcement and
intelligence agencies reported immediate security threats. The Home Department said terrorist
organisations could target public gatherings, creating risks for citizens and public safety.
Authorities said rallies, demonstrations and other large gatherings could become potential
targets for terrorist attacks. The government therefore considered preventive measures
necessary to reduce risks and maintain public peace during this sensitive period.
However, the restrictions do not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers and burials.
Mosques and other places of worship are also exempt, allowing religious activities to continue
without interruption.
Courts, government institutions and officially permitted events are also excluded from the
restrictions. Law enforcement, intelligence agencies and security personnel performing official
duties will remain exempt while carrying out their responsibilities.
The Secretary Home imposed the restrictions under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal
Procedure, 1898. The Punjab Home Department issued a notification for immediate
implementation across the province.
The department said the decision was taken to protect public peace and the lives and property
of citizens. The restrictions will remain effective until October 15 unless the government modifies
or withdraws the order earlier.
Authorities are expected to monitor places and ensure compliance during this period. Citizens
have been urged to follow the notification and cooperate with officials to help maintain safety
across Punjab.
