The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from September 23
to October 5, 2026. The order restricts gatherings of five or more people at public places,
roads, highways, and open areas. Public rallies, processions, sit-ins, demonstrations, and
similar gatherings are also covered by the restrictions.

The Punjab Home Department has also prohibited the carrying and display of weapons in
public places. People are also not allowed to encourage or invite others to join gatherings that
are declared unlawful under the order.

The restrictions do not apply to weddings, funeral prayers, burials, mosques, and other
places of worship. Courts, government institutions, and officially permitted events are also
exempt. Law-enforcement, intelligence, and security personnel performing official duties are not
covered by these restrictions.

According to the Home Department, the decision was taken after security agencies reported
possible threats to public gatherings. Officials said large gatherings could become potential
targets for terrorist attacks. The order was issued under Section 144(6) of the Code of
Criminal Procedure, 1898, with the protection of citizens’ lives and property stated as the
government’s priority.
