Baqai Dental Students Spread Oral Health Awareness in Lyari

Baqai Dental College students promoted oral health awareness in Lyari by teaching women
and schoolchildren simple ways to protect their teeth and gums. The awareness sessions took
place at the Family Welfare Centre in Lyari, Karachi and focused on preventing common dental
problems through daily care.

The college’s Department of Community Dentistry organized the visit to share useful dental
health information with local residents. Students explained why brushing twice daily with fluoride
toothpaste is important for keeping teeth clean and healthy. They also demonstrated the correct
brushing method and recommended using a soft-bristled toothbrush to protect the gums.
The sessions also highlighted the importance of cleaning between teeth with dental floss.
Students explained how floss removes trapped food and plaque from places a toothbrush may
not clean properly. They encouraged participants to follow these habits regularly to reduce the
risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Professor Dr Asghar Ali Shigri supervised the community visit alongside Dr Samreen, Dr Noman
and Dr Mohsin Abbas. Their guidance helped students share practical information with women
and children in an easy and understandable way. The activity encouraged participants to take
better care of their oral health through simple daily routines.

The visit also gave dental students an opportunity to use their classroom knowledge in a real
community setting. By speaking directly with local residents, they gained experience in
explaining health information and promoting preventive care. Such activities help future dentists
understand the importance of educating people before serious dental problems develop.

Community awareness programmes can help families understand how everyday habits affect
their dental health. Regular brushing and flossing are simple steps that can support healthier
teeth and gums over time. The Lyari visit also showed how dental colleges can support public
wellbeing by sharing practical knowledge beyond hospitals and clinics.
