King Charles III, Queen Camilla and Prince William will visit Wales to remember the victims of
the Aberfan disaster 60th anniversary on October 21, 2026. They will meet survivors and
families to honour the 144 people who lost their lives in one of Britain’s saddest tragedies.
The disaster happened on October 21, 1966, when a large pile of coal waste collapsed and
rushed down a hillside. It buried Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes in the village of
Aberfan. The tragedy killed 116 children and 28 adults, leaving families and the entire
community heartbroken.
During the royal visit, the King and Prince William will lay wreaths at Aberfan Memorial Garden.
Queen Camilla will place flowers to honour those who died. The garden stands on the site of the
former school and remains an important place for remembrance.
The royal family will also visit the Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre. They will meet
survivors, parents who lost their children and other local residents. The gathering will give
people an opportunity to share memories and remember their loved ones together.
Prince William will then visit Ynysowen Community Primary School. He will meet students and
teachers who have worked on projects to mark the anniversary. He will also unveil the Aberfan
Memorial Tree which will help younger generations learn about this painful part of Welsh history.
The disaster continues to affect many people even after six decades. Families who lost loved
ones still carry painful memories of that terrible day. The anniversary offers an opportunity for
the community to come together and honour everyone whose life changed forever.
The visit will also remember the courage and strength shown by Aberfan residents after the
tragedy. Their stories continue to remind people of the importance of community support during
difficult times.
The royal family’s visit will pay tribute to the victims and show respect for the survivors. It will
also help keep their memories alive for future generations.
