A private hospital in Karachi has been sealed after a baby tested positive for mpox. The
Karachi hospital mpox case has raised serious concerns about patient safety and the need for
proper medical care.
The Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) took action after receiving a report from the district
health officer. According to the report, the baby may have contracted the infection after
circumcision at Ibne Hassan Hospital in Malir 15.
The report stated that contaminated scissors were allegedly used during the procedure. This
raised concerns about the hospital’s hygiene practices and the safety measures followed during
medical treatment.
The SHCC said the hospital was sealed because of poor cleanliness and weak infection control
measures. Officials also reported concerns about possible medical negligence that could put
patients at risk.
Laboratory testing at a Dow University facility confirmed that the baby’s sample tested positive
for mpox. Following the report, SHCC officials visited the hospital with support from the Korangi
district health officer and police officials.
According to the commission, the hospital was allegedly operating illegally with unqualified staff.
Officials also reported that some individuals were providing medical services without the
required qualifications.
The SHCC team reportedly faced resistance while carrying out its duties. However, Korangi
police helped control the situation, allowing officials to seal the facility.
Last week, a 40-day-old baby tested positive for mpox and was taken to the Sindh Infectious
Diseases Hospital and Research Centre in Karachi. The infant was receiving treatment after
being referred from a private hospital.
A senior doctor said the baby had developed a fever and rashes across his body. His parents
first sought medical help at a private facility before he was referred for specialised treatment.
The incident has raised concerns about medical safety and infection prevention in private
hospitals. Healthcare facilities must maintain proper hygiene and use sterilised equipment
during medical procedures.
The case also highlights the importance of qualified medical staff and regular inspections.
Authorities must ensure hospitals follow safety standards to protect patients, especially
newborns and young children.
