Water, Food and National Security Are Closely Connected, Says IWMI Representative

International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Country Representative in Pakistan Dr.
Muhammad Ashraf has highlighted the strong connection between water security, food security
and national security. He said Pakistan needs serious efforts to address its growing water
challenges.

Dr. Muhammad Ashraf shared these views during the opening session of Pakistan Water Week
2026. The five-day international conference brings together experts and representatives from
different countries to discuss important water-related issues.

During his address, Dr. Ashraf highlighted the growing impact of climate change on Pakistan’s
water resources. He explained that changes in weather patterns and environmental conditions
are creating serious challenges for water availability and management.

He said Pakistan Water Week had become an important platform for national and international
experts. The event provides an opportunity to discuss water problems and find practical
solutions for better water management.

Dr. Ashraf also shared important lessons from previous editions of Pakistan Water Week. He
stressed that water security must remain a major priority on Pakistan’s national agenda.
He explained that water problems cannot be solved by one department or sector alone. Different
government departments and organisations need to work together to improve water
management and protect available resources.

The IWMI representative also called for stronger cooperation between different sectors. He said
joint efforts are necessary to achieve sustainable water management and protect the country’s
future water supplies.

The sixth edition of Pakistan Water Week 2026 is being held under the theme “Commitments to
Action: Advancing Water Security and Achieving Climate-Resilient Food Systems in Pakistan.”
The conference focuses on improving water security and protecting food production from
climate-related challenges. It also aims to encourage practical actions that can support
sustainable agriculture and stronger food systems.

The event is organised by the International Water Management Institute in collaboration with the
Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) and the Ministry of Water
Resources.

Several national and international organisations are supporting the conference. These include
UNICEF, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the CGIAR
Policy Innovations Science Program and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain
Development (ICIMOD).

The conference provides an important opportunity for experts and policymakers to share
knowledge and discuss solutions. Its main goal is to encourage stronger cooperation and
practical steps towards improving Pakistan’s water security.

The discussions are particularly important for Pakistan because water availability directly affects
agriculture and food production. Better water management can help protect farmers and
strengthen the country’s food supply.
